Why Lost Memories?
In 2017, I saw a bucket of old photos at a thrift shop in Brooklyn. I didn’t buy anything that day but left thinking feeling bad about the bucket. Each one of the hundreds of picture was a moment, a memory, from a real person’s life. Something that was special enough to capture forever was now collecting dust in a back corner.
I was motivated by two reasons. Firstly, my family memories. All four of my grandparents were born in different countries. The combination of the time period they grew up in and their life stories (for another time) meant they only have a few pictures of their early life. So when I see an old picture, I think about how that is probably one of a few photos of someone’s grandparents. And if they were pictures of my family, I would want someone to hold on to them.
Secondly, I am obsessed with organizing all of my pictures. As the family photographer, I’ve taken tens of thousands of pictures in my lifetime and that is only going up exponentially. I love looking back at my memories and reminiscing over good times. The least I can do is collect and share these photos and videos because memories need to be shared.
And while all of our memories will eventually be lost, it means something to keep them around for just a little longer.
